Why Daysy is my preferred method of birth control

A bit of my back story: I have been on birth control since I was about 15 years old. It all started because, like many others, I was experiencing period pain and exhaustion like no other. I then continued synthetic hormonal birth control up until 28. That’s a long time for a body to be constantly provided hormones it should be producing on its own.

In early 2018, I started experiencing overwhelming anxiety, extreme emotional mood swings, and crippling exhaustion. Like it was hard for me to get out of bed or off the couch some days. I’ve always had a subtle nagging pull of anxiety, and have even experienced a few anxiety attacks, but what I was feeling was a whole new level for me.

That’s when I decided it was time to remove my IUD (I was using Skyla) and give the Daysy fertility monitor a try. Remember, ladies, it’s always okay to serve ourselves first and make decisions that are important to our health and wellness.

Daysy is part basal thermometer and part app. She’s a small device that you use to orally take your temperature the moment you wake up, and based on your temperature, you will receive feedback on whether or not you’re fertile. That morning reading is your fertility status for the next 24 hours.

From there, you and your partner can determine the best course of action for the day based on your intention – to get pregnant or to prevent pregnancy.

The Daysy ovulation monitor. Small and compact!

What makes Daysy different from other thermometers is that it has a built-in algorithm to learn your individual cycle and you will begin to see more customized readings the longer you’ve used it. Bottom line: by consistently using Daysy over a longer period of time, Daysy will begin to predict when you’re fertile and ovulating, and when you’re not.

Like I mentioned above, it is imperative to use Daysy right when you wake up after a night of at least four hours of consecutive sleep. Not after you get up to go to the bathroom, not after you check your phone, not after you kiss your partner good morning. The reason why the timing is so crucial is that Daysy is measuring your body’s resting temperature and that number should be captured in its most natural state to ensure the most accurate reading.

Also, if you are menstruating that day, make sure to let your Daysy know by holding down the center button until the small purple square pops up. That is important data for your Daysy to know and will affect how she learns your cycles.

The yellow light means Daysy is learning my cycle.

After you take your morning reading, which takes about thirty seconds, your Daysy light will turn either red, yellow, or green.

  • Red: you are fertile, use an additional barrier method to prevent pregnancy. I prefer these vegan condoms.
  • Yellow: handle these days like red days, they mean that Daysy is experiencing cycle variations and is still learning your cycle.
  • Green: you are not fertile and can enjoy all-natural sexy time with your partner.

From there, you can choose to sync your daily reading to the Daysy app to chart out your temperature and cycle changes. Personally, I sync to the app every few days! Again, it takes about three months for Daysy to learn your cycles, so don’t get discouraged if you’re seeing a lot of red and yellow days pop up over the first ninety days. It’s important to make sure your partner is on the same page as you throughout this process!

Yes! Daysy 99.4% effective, to be exact. It’s important to note that Daysy is a fertility calulator vs. a traditional birth control like the pill. With Daysy, there are no synthetic hormones, chemicals, or unwanted side-effects and full control over whether or not you’d like to try for a baby within a moments notice. Read more about Daysy and traditional birth control methods for even more insight into the differences.

Should you decide to begin a family, Daysy can be used to chart out your most fertile days and give you more insight into when the potential for pregnancy is at its highest. Rest assured that the Daysy effectiveness is definitely in your favor.

  • 100% natural – there are no synthetic hormones or medicine of any kind
  • Empowers me to reconnect with my body’s natural cycles
  • One-time payment vs. monthly prescription bills (like when I was on the NuvaRing)
  • Super user friendly and easy to use
  • 99.4% accuracy once Daysy has figured out your cycles
  • Easy to figure out whether you’re fertile or not
  • Varying settings in the app depending on if you’re trying to get pregnant or not

  • Remembering to take my temperature immediately upon waking up (I’ve started placing it on top of my phone to remind me to do it first thing)
  • No bluetooth syncing. You do have to plug it into your phone (with the extension piece for iPhone 7 and above), but it’s really not that complicated
  • Remaining patient throughout the learning cycle

All things considered, the Daysy fertility monitor is hands-down my favorite birth control method to date. Just make sure to use condoms on red and yellow days if you aren’t trying for a baby! It has empowered me to take back control of my own body and begin to understand how I feel without synthetic hormones. I feel confident and secure while using Daysy, and it has opened up my relationship to some very important topics, including how I’m feeling during different phases of my cycle.

If you’re considering changing your hormonal birth control, Daysy might just be the right choice for you. Please note, I do suggest working with a functional doctor or midwife while navigating the transition from hormonal to non-hormonal birth control, as this experience can be different for everyone.

Please know that my experiences are simply that, my experiences. I believe women should choose a birth control method that works specifically for their body and realize that Daysy might not be the right choice for everyone. Thankfully, it was for me!
